Great First Day in First Grade!

Today was a great start to what will hopefully be a great school year! My kids are too cute. They were all hugs and smiles this morning. They kept telling me they loved me all day! We did a lot of fun get-to-know-you stuff, put away that giant pile of school supplies that always signifies the beginning of school, and started on a little writing and math.

I definitely noticed a big difference in independence between fourth and first graders... I tied a lot of shoes and opened a lot of ketchup packets today!!! I'm sure I'll miss that independence level in the students as the year goes on, but today it was nice to have the sweet attitudes that come with first grade.

My schedule is amazing. We have an academically-packed morning... Calendar Time, Literacy Block, Writer's Workshop, Math Block. I'll have to plan some break time and also a snack- our lunch isn't until 1:00! However, my afternoon is laid-back... special areas, then lunch, then recess, then dismissal! I can't wait to get into Writer's Workshop with these new writers. Should be very exciting to see where we can go!

I took pictures, but they came out blurry. :( I think my camera lens had condensation on it. A mom of one of my students took lots of pictures, so when she emails them to me, I'll post them.

I knew you would be successful! It is funny to read your blog and Stacey's. They are such perfect complements of each other. The things that you missed from today she enjoyed and vica versa. Good luck on your new adventure.

I am so happy you are enjoying the little ones! Call me when you get a chance; I had an activity I wanted to share with you. By the way, my saving grace when I taught little ones was to assign an official "shoe tier." I didn't tie shoes b/c the kids always knew which friend to go to for help.
