A Sewing First - Adult Sew

On Friday, my parents took Katie Anne out for breakfast, and then KA and my mom worked in the garden and played at their house. So, I had about four hours to myself before I picked Katie Anne up for our lunch playdate (more on that in a minute). Thanks big time, Mom, for the morning off!

I got several things done - put away some clutter still hanging around from vacation, did dishes and laundry, and got a sewing project done!

I made my first adult piece of clothing - a shirt for myself! I actually bought this pattern (and another dress pattern) back when I bought the materials for Katie Anne's Easter dress, so I've been holding onto this for a long time. I chose it before I lost weight, so it isn't necessarily the one I'd choose now... it has a bit of a maternity vibe. But, I already had the pattern and fabric, so I thought I'd go for it!

It wasn't too difficult - it took me about 3 hours from cutting the pattern out to totally finishing. Here are the things I like about it: I really like the fabric - pink with khaki and dark brown swirls and black graphic print flowers, so it really can be worn with any color of bottoms. I like that that sleeves aren't tight (in fact, the whole thing is not tight. The pattern I bought was 10-12-14-16-18 sizes, which is what I needed at the time, so I had to go with the 10. I had to take it in a little under the arms after I made it so it wouldn't be as baggy.) I like the yoke design in front.

Here's what I don't like: It does look a little maternity. It is a little big. The pattern called for bias tape around the back neckline, and I think that looks a little homemade (and not in a good way). If I make this pattern again (and I'm not sure I will), I would cut a lining and line the back instead. I would also shorten it because it's a little long.

I will probably save this pattern and make it in bigger sizes next time I get pregnant as a maternity top. I think it would be very easy to even alter the sides of the front panel to make it even more blousy in the waist for later months of pregnancy, but I'll probably not make it again for just regular wear.

I would really like to make myself some skirts for work since our dress code is getting a bit stricter with our new administrators, so I need to buy some patterns for that. I'll try the dress pattern I bought soon, and I'll post that when I'm done.
